First, I should clarify that the research is a survey of British men conducted by the British Heart Foundation. So take what I'm about to reveal with a grain of salt, an international perspective, or some fashion metaphor that's not coming to mind. That said, here's the list of women's clothing items labeled far too distracting and/or unprofessional to be worn at work:
Hotpants (50% of the men surveyed said they're too distracting)
Sheer blouses (41%)
Low cut tops (38%)
Anything with leopard or animal print (33%)
Slogan t-shirts (32%)
UGG boots (26%)
Amen, fellas. I'm totally on board with you about the UGG boots. They are ugg-ly, even outside of work.
Now that we know what the men are thinking, where are the women on the wearable issues of the day? The British Heart Foundation surveyed them too, and their responses were, shall we say, colorful. More than one-third of the women surveyed said that wearing red makes them feel more confident, while slightly more than one-quarter (26%) said that a touch of red lipstick is a definite confidence-builder. Meanwhile, nearly half (48%) said that a red dress is the sexiest thing they could possibly wear to work. Well, red is a pretty awesome color. Just don't go overboard with the Gwen Stefani look at work, I guess.
So there you have it, ladies. The list of 80s-inspired clothing items that could make you "too irresistible" at work, which as we've learned isn't a good thing to be in Iowa. I'm going to stop here, because I have to do some laundry. I'll start with a load of reds.
